Accessibility Statement for the Digital Learning Team

This accessibility statement applies to this website, the Digital Learning Team website. Please note, this website is listed on the UWE Bristol Digital learning accessibility statement where further details can be found.

This website is run by the Digital Learning Team at UWE Bristol. We are actively working to increase the accessibility and usability of our website because we want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.

We have built this website to be compliant to level Double-A of the World Wide Web Consortium W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0. These guidelines aim to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities. Web content that follows these guidelines will make the internet more user friendly for everyone.

Web browser options

Most web browsers share common accessibility tools which will enable users to interact with this website.

For example, that means that via your web browser you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software and see elements in focus highlighted with a red border
  • skip to the main content when using a screen reader
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
  • choose from multiple ways to find web pages on the site including clear and intuitive navigation, site search, listing related content, a list of all pages and a site map.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

You can access most areas of this website via keyboard access and screen readers.

In considering the design of this website we have chosen to invert our hyperlink text colours to reduce visual stress and encourage consistency with UWE branding. Hyperlinks appear as red text, and when hovered will appear blue.

Although we have tried our best to make sure this website will function for every user we are aware some elements are not currently fully accessible:

  • you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text
  • some older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • some lists aren’t marked up as HTML lists
  • some page links don’t have a visible indication of their focus state
  • some embedded multimedia is not identified via accessible text
  • some embedded multimedia is not navigable using keyboard access or voice recognition.

Please see below for more information about inaccessible elements of the website and our plans to improve this.

Third party content

Some content is 3rd-party and not under our control:

  • YouTube and Vimeo videos
  • CookiePro cookie banner
  • Links that take you to other internal (to UWE) or external websites.

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The Digital Learning Team at UWE Bristol is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Some of our older PDFs and Word documents don’t meet current accessibility standards. For example, they may not be marked up so they are accessible to a screen reader. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role value). It is our aim that any PDFs or other documents published since 23 September 2018 that are not currently accessible will be identified and fixed by 31 December 2024. Any new PDFs or other documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.
  • Some of our older videos don’t yet have captions. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.1 (audio-only and video-only pre-recorded), 1.2.2 (captions pre-recorded), 1.2.3 (audio description or media alternative pre-recorded) and 1.2.5 (audio description pre-recorded). Any videos published since 23 September 2018 that are not currently accessible will be identified and fixed by 31 December 2024. Any new videos we publish will have captions.
  • There isn’t yet a skip link to navigate past the tag cloud links in the footer. We are working on a solution to this and intend to have a solution by 31 December 2024.

Content not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Older PDFs and other documents

The accessibility regulations don’t require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. However, while these documents are not subject to the legislation, we intend to identify these documents and make them accessible by 31 December 2024. Any new PDFs or other documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Older video

The regulations do not apply to recorded videos published before 23 September 2020. However, while these videos are not subject to the legislation, we intend to identify these videos and make them accessible by 31 December 2024. Any new PDFs or other documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We plan to improve accessibility on this website by doing the following:

  • provide training for our content authors and editors in best practice to make content accessible from the outset;
  • audit our existing website content to identify areas that can be improved;
  • increase use of manual testing by users of assistive technology to test the website for accessibility.
